Both male and female volunteers dressed in bright orange coats or jackets and part of the Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) are responsible for informing the general public about approaching cyclones. As a result, it's critical to be familiar with the CPP volunteers in your community and to be well informed on the cyclone warning signs.

CPP volunteers use the "3 Flag Method" to indicate the approaching warning signals of a cyclone. In this case, they use a quadrangular red-black flag. Be aware of where these flags will be raised in your camp or area before the cyclone emergency.

What to do when you see 1 flag:

  • When a red-black flag is raised, it indicates the warning signal for caution, meaning that a cyclone may occur within the next few days.
  • During this time, follow the instructions of the CPP volunteers wearing orange jackets.
  • Take shelter inside the house with your family members. Remember that the cyclone may result in heavy rainfall and flooding in the camp/your area.
  • If the cyclone moves away or weakens, remove the flag. And if the cyclone advances, raise the signal of 2 flags.
  • If you have a radio, tune in to Bangladesh Betar 100.8 FM or Naf Radio 99.2 FM.

What to do when you see 2 flags:

  • When two red-black flags are raised, it indicates the warning signal for danger, meaning that the cyclone may strike your camp/area within the next 1-2 days. It is crucial to take immediate precautions during this time.
  • Take all children and family members inside the house and ensure a safe place. If anyone gets separated during the cyclone, establish a pre-designated meeting point to regroup.
  • Follow the instructions of CPP volunteers wearing bright orange jackets and volunteers from other service centers.
  • Your own home is your primary shelter at the camp, but if it is vulnerable, designate the strongest house in your neighborhood as a shelter during the cyclone.
  • Keep your valuable documents, such as identification cards and ration cards, in a secure place, preferably in a plastic bag.
  • Store a few days' worth's of dry food, water, and fuel in a safe place, such as burying them in the ground inside the house or in the neighbor's house where you will take shelter during the cyclone.
  • If there is a pregnant woman in your family or nearby, provide special care and ensure her safety.
  • When a cyclone approaches, you will see three flags flying as a warning signal, and you will hear sirens. At that time, you should seek shelter inside your house as quickly as possible.
  • To get the latest news about the cyclone, tune in to Bangladesh Betar 100.8 FM or Naf Radio 99.2 FM.

What to do when you see 2 flags:

  • The signal of three red-black flags indicates the approaching cyclone, meaning that the cyclone will strike your area within a few hours. At this time, CPP volunteers will alert you by using a microphone and sounding the sirens. As soon as you receive the alert signal, seek shelter in a safe place.
  • Follow the instructions of CPP volunteers wearing bright orange jackets and volunteers from other service centers.
  • Ensure that everyone in your family has taken shelter in the safest place in the house.
  • Stay as low as possible during the cyclone and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy table or mattress.
  • Stay indoors and avoid leaving the house until you receive instructions or updates about the cyclone.
  • After the cyclone has passed, ensure the safety of children, pregnant women, disabled individuals, elderly people, and others.
  • To get the latest news about the cyclone, tune in to Bangladesh Betar 100.8 FM or Naf Radio 99.2 FM.
